Dining in College

An informal buffet meal in the Pennington SuiteMeal times provide SCR members with a valuable opportunity for fellowship, friendship, and the exchange of ideas in a relaxed environment. Meals are served at High Table in the main Dining Hall, accessed via the stairway outside the SCR.

Regular Formal dinners are held (as advertised) at which members of this and other universities are entitled to wear an academic gown (sometimes referred to as an “undress gown”). A number of gowns are available in the SCR for the use of members.

Members are encouraged to gather in the SCR before meals, especially at formal meals where drinks are served beforehand.

Booking Arrangements

All meals need to be booked in advance by completing a booking form. Please indicate any specific dietary requirements when booking.

Bookings for lunch and dinner must be received by 10.00am on the day (and by 10.30am on Fridays for weekend meals). Formals should be booked as early as possible to avoid disappointment as space is limited, but in any case by 10.00am on the Friday of the week preceding the formal (unless otherwise stated on the events diary).

Guest Nights

Each term a Guest Night is organised, providing a good opportunity to invite guests to dine with us (though members are welcome to attend without guests!). The format of these events varies: some are in the Pennington Suite, others at High Table, and others mixed with members of the JCR and MCR. Details of the timing, menu, dress code, booking arrangements and price are advertised in advance (see Events).

Drinks in the SCR

A drinks cabinet is available for members, and the key is available at reception. Alcoholic drinks must be signed for and will be billed at the advertised prices; fruit juice, tea and coffee is available free of charge. (It is not necessary to sign for wine before formal dinner.)

Parking at College

The University has recently tightened-up its arrangements for parking. Whenever you are visiting the College for SCR business or a function, especially on a weekday during working hours, it is advisable to report to Reception. If you leave your name and registration number you will be issued with a coupon to display in your car.

Please note...

  1. Meals are not usually available during the vacation periods.
  2. College reserves the right to withdraw the High Table facility.
  3. No refunds will be given for meals booked and not taken.
  4. Occasional changes are necessary to the arrangements listed above, so please check with reception when you book your meal if you have any uncertainties.
