News: Public Talk: Treasures in the River Wear (Gary Bankhead)

Sunday 2nd November at 2.15pm
Holgate House, Grey College, South Road, Durham, DH1 3LG

Gary Bankhead is a local fireman, diver and archaeology student here at Durham University. In 2007 – using his 25 years of diving experience, cold water rescue training with the fire service and specialist dry suit diving gear – Gary decided to investigate the riverbed beneath the city's bridges.

Since then he has recovered more than 3,500 objects and established a vital research collection which will shed light on centuries of Durham's past. In June of this year he launched an astonishing exhibition of his finds, many declared to be of national importance, and in this talk he will discuss his extraordinary conservation work.

Anyone is welcome to attend this free public talk. If you don't know how to find Holgate House, ask at college reception.

Lunch is available for SCR members at 13.00 before the talk, with drinks served from 12.30 in the SCR. Please book online at http://www.dur.ac.uk/grey.college/about/hightablebookings, before 10.00 Friday 31st October.
