News: Public Talk: Border Ballads

Sunday 7th May 2017 at 2.15pm
Holgate House, Grey College, South Road, Durham, DH1 3LG

Like the Homeric Greeks, the Border Reivers were cruel and coarse savages, yet they were also poets who expressed sorrow and charm in the highest poetry. We will hear fine performances of ballads from Yarrow and Ettrick, with photographs of the settings of the stories, dating from the thirteenth century to the Union of the Crowns in 1603.

Presented by the singer Poppy Holden from her research at Newcastle University on the living tradition of Border Ballads.

Free public talk. Everyone welcome.
