Dining in College

College Meals

If you would like to attend a regular college lunch or dinner (not a formal), then please use this form. Unlike formals, payment is made on the day via PDQ.

Meal times provide SCR members with a valuable opportunity for fellowship, friendship, and the exchange of ideas in a relaxed environment. SCR members who are mentors can arrange meals with their mentees. Informal meals are taken through the servery with SCR members sitting at High Table in the main Dining Hall. Servery meals should be paid for as they are taken.

Formal College Dining

Formals are organised between the College and the student common rooms, at which the SCR sits at the High Table. They take place throughout term, but usually on a Thursday evening. Drinks are served in the SCR before dinner.

A three course service dinner is followed by coffee (and sometimes cheese) in the SCR.

Regular Formal Dinners are held at which members of this and other universities are entitled to wear a plain black gown. A number of gowns are available in the SCR for the use of members.

Members are encouraged to gather in the SCR before meals, especially at formal meals where drinks are provided.

Time: usually 6:45 to 7:15pm

Booking arrangements

Formals need to be booked and paid for at the latest a week before via the appropriate link available in the calendar and weekly newsletter (this form includes booking and payment).

Price: £16.60 (including VAT) for the 2023/24 Academic year. Members can opt to pay for additional wine in the booking form, and soft drinks are provided gratis by the SCR.

Dress code: gown, jacket and tie for men and the equivalent for women (see events calendar and booking form for details).

Guest nights

Guest nights are normally held termly, providing a good opportunity for members to bring guests into College. The format of these varies: some are in the Pennington Suite, others at High Table, and others mixed with members of the JCR and MCR. Details of the timing, menu, dress code, booking arrangements and price are advertised in advance and bookings must be made no more than a week before.

Parking

University parking restrictions do not apply after 5 pm (weekdays) or at weekends, so members can park outside college when attending events. If a member comes into College during the day, they are welcome to search for parking space on the Grey College site, though these may not always be available, and they should let reception know their registration number.
